Change and transformation 1
I went to a spring equinox celebration and one of the meditations was on ‘Change and Transformation’. I have been ruminating on this theme and how as a creative I need a certain amount of change as fuel. I dislike feeling stagnant and need ‘flow’ in each area of my life. I need balance and a sense of progress. Too much change and I feel knocked off course.
Coming through a divorce I realise that change is the only constant in life, and it is through embracing change that we truly come alive. As I grow into my midlife self I am not without growing pains but also a new sense of hope has revealed itself and an excitement about life to be lived. Change gives an invitation to embrace the unknown. It is the force that propels us forward, nudging us out of our comfort zones and into the unknown. While it can be daunting and unsettling, change is also a source of endless possibility. It challenges us to adapt, to evolve, and to discover new aspects of ourselves. Creativity invites us to do the same.
By getting off auto pilot you can embrace the new. Stay open to what is fresh around you. Nature often serves as my muse, reminding me of the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of change. What are you noticing in the new season?
I have been chasing the sunshine and aware of the warmth on my face. I have been aware of the sky and the clouds that paint themselves across the blue. The brighter days I see more colours, more varieties of greens and ochres and mauves. The grey days I see the shape and line and wonder how to render that in art.
Creativity, like the seasons, follows a cyclical pattern, with periods of inspiration, creation, and rest. Do not push for more than your mind, body and soul are ready for. Embrace the pace of nature and take your lead from her. Sunshine fuelled days make me feel alive. But at this time of year there is still one foot in the winter. Do not expect full bloom in a season of seedlings. Understanding and honouring these natural rhythms can lead to more sustainable creative practices.
This week, find a quiet spot where you can connect with nature. Take a few deep breaths; centre yourself in the present moment. Check in with how you are feeling and how that reflects the momentum of nature. Breathe. Notice. Gather some signs of spring - blossom, opening leaves. Notice the light, the blue of the sky. Take heed of nature and allow her to fuel your creativity and embrace the new.
Change and transformation can feel slow. Creativity can feel stagnant and then all of a sudden there is sunshine and a whoosh of new ideas and a step forward into the new.
