There is a photographic term which is used on photos of the winter season. It is called ‘bokeh’ and is the diffused blur and hazy light seen on midwinter photos. I love a twinkly string of lights, a grouping of candles. I love the sparkles in the dark.
The word ‘bokeh’ is Japanese and means ‘blur’ or ‘haze’. It relates to feelings of jet-lag or being half asleep. It’s a perfect description of my December brain! As I sign off until the new year I am turning towards the light, the gentle, hazy dance of light. I am letting my half-asleep state be my hibernation and fuelling myself on sweet treats, soulful music and films that lead me to new places.
In the stillness there will be connections - hands held and shared moments. In the space between a busy 2024 and a busy 2025 there will be a healing time and a time to read the books that go untouched. There will be walks in murky weather and a gratitude for all that I have had the opportunity to do in 2024 - teaching online and face-to-face, running an art retreat, growing my artwork (and my community) and clearing a path to this next stage of my life. I feel I have shed a skin in 2024 and found a purer form of myself. I look forward to being her next year.
Who have you become in 2024? What version of yourself are you letting go of? What are you going to do in the stillness of midwinter to feed your soul?
All good wishes to you
I post three free-to-read posts each month and a subscriber post that I publish on the first of every month. It’s a magazine style post where I share, over a three monthly cycle, inspirations, creative wellbeing advice, how to manage creative block and move to creative flow. In month two, I share lessons from my online courses in the form of a ‘dose’ of creativity to kickstart your sketchbook practice. Coming in 2025 are interviews with other artists as well as news from my studio and insights into my creative practice (in month 3). Join my tribe for £5 a month or £50 a year and get access to my previous posts too.
"I feel I have shed a skin in 2024 and found a purer form of myself. I look forward to being her next year." What a wonderful place to be as we close out the year Helen :0) I shall be outside as much as possible over the coming week or so and resting in candle & fairy lights when home. Keeping things simple. Wishing you all the best throughout the midwinter season. May it be all you need it to be.
A wish for Restful times winging its way to you Helen. X
