The Olympic Games have got off to a good start as athletes from around the world proudly bear the 5 rings and strive for a bronze, silver or gold medal. Our media fills with accolades for our fittest and we are all encouraged to take steps to increase our own activity. It becomes strange how alongside atrocities of war and horror being shown on the news, sits this age old pursuit of ‘faster’ and ‘stronger’ for our entertainment. What we have created is a space for a shared human experience, a space where we can look away from adversity and look to something joyful and celebratory.
As an artist the goals are somewhat different. No one gives out prizes (okay so there are some, but I have yet to meet an artist driven by these). There is no creativity Olympics, but art and making can offer a similar experience of shared connection and a celebration of human endeavour. For those of us who put in hours of practice and development in quiet spaces, we do not look for a medal, we look for the joy, the mindful space to turn away from the challenges of the world. We wait to see what this body, mind and soul is a conduit for, what flows through and into the world.
