Make art out loud
Have you ever made art in your head? It looks amazing doesn’t it?! Definitely worthy of a gallery wall!
But there is a difference between making art in your head and making it out loud. It is the experience of doing. The doing can be inhibited by thinking about the finished piece, the accolade you may get, the frame to put it in. Then once you start, it doesn’t quite live up to expectation.
The moment-by-moment experience of the process of making art is what we call creative flow. Being in flow without self-judgment means getting on with making art BEFORE you have created it in your head.
I am an advocate for new beginnings and unfinished works. Far better to start five or six pieces and take one or two through to fruition than to labour and overwork a precious piece, disappointed that it doesn’t live up to expectation. Far better to have unrequited creative fantasies and a full sketchbook of unique creative realities.
Give your ideas space to grow, give yourself space to express. Take off the idea that you are making what you have already envisaged. Be the conduit and let the creative force move through you. Begin before you are ready.
Open your journal or sketchbook and allow yourself to express your creativity freely. You can write poetry, draw, paint, or engage in any other creative activity that speaks to you. Let go of any expectations or judgments and simply enjoy the process of creation.
